October is a wonderful time of year to explore, learn, and create special memories with children. As the weather becomes cooler and the leaves begin to change, families and child care providers have many opportunities to introduce young children to the beauty of the fall season through simple, hands-on experiences.
Fall provides many opportunities for children to observe changes in the world around them. During walks or outdoor play, children can look at different colored leaves, feel the texture of tree bark, listen to the sounds of nature, and notice changes in the weather.
Providers and families can collect a few leaves and use them for simple activities such as sorting by color or size, creating leaf collages, or talking about the different shapes they see. These activities help children develop observation, vocabulary, early math skills, and fine motor skills while having fun.
October is also a great time for seasonal activities that encourage creativity and imagination. Children can participate in age-appropriate art projects, sing fall songs, read books about autumn, and explore pumpkins, apples, and other seasonal items.
For infants and toddlers, activities do not need to be complicated. A basket of safe fall objects can become an opportunity for children to touch, explore, compare, and discover. Providers can talk with children about what they see and encourage them to use words, gestures, and expressions to communicate what they are experiencing.
Families and providers can work together by sharing information about children’s interests, routines, accomplishments, and any changes they may be experiencing. Strong communication between families and providers helps create a positive experience for children.The most important part is not the activity itself, it is the time spent together. Young children learn through conversation, connection, play, and everyday experiences.
