Stop. Let’s Reflect on the Space.

Summer is in full swing: it’s already August. Yes, keep the children hydrated. Yes, be mindful of the temperature before outdoor activities. Yes, let children play in nature and explore their surroundings. Let every moment become a learning experience. But… our little ones in 3-K are about to return — or begin — in our programs, so it’s important to take a moment to say this to you: STOP.

Pause in your program. Sit down in the middle of your classroom and ask yourself:
Is my space truly ready to welcome and support the new 3-K children?

Here are a few suggestions to help guide your reflection:

Now is the time to think about whether our space is simple, safe, and developmentally appropriate for young children. In other words, is our environment kind and inviting enough for children to integrate naturally and find opportunities for self-driven growth?

It’s also time to revisit whether the materials we provide encourage children to explore the space autonomously. This includes considering whether some things might be better removed — for example: the television.

And finally, ask yourself whether your space invites calm, or if it unintentionally contributes to overstimulation. The wall colors, what we have hanging around, cluttered materials — all of these factors will influence children during those crucial first weeks of transition. And ultimately, the entire group dynamic.

Now is the time to stop, reflect, and intentionally consider:
What kind of space are you offering your children?
