From materials lists to child development…

That time of year is approaching — you know exactly which one I’m talking about. You start asking long before it begins whether we already have funds available to purchase materials. And as soon as someone on the team says “yes,” the list frenzy begins.

And when I say “frenzy,” I don’t mean that the lists come in too quickly, with too many links, or disorganized — that’s part of our job. I say “frenzy” because many times we build those lists with our eyes rather than with our observations of what our children truly need to optimize their development.

We often fall into the trap of ordering electronic toys that do little to support infant development and have a very short lifespan. Or we rush to buy paper, paints, and crayons to repeat the same seasonal activities. Or we try to get school supplies that ease our own financial burden. Don’t get me wrong — none of that is “wrong.” I’m just saying that it doesn’t directly respond to the needs of the children who bring our programs to life.

With this, I want to call your attention to two things.
First, to join our Free Movement Workshop on November 20 via Zoom.
Second, to approach your materials list guided by your observations when completing your order. Let’s ask ourselves: Do I want this for myself, or do the children need it to create a richer environment that supports strong developmental growth?

Let’s talk about possible materials that can truly support child development. Let’s reflect on how we can spark curiosity instead of hindering learning processes. May our materials list be the best evidence that we deeply observe and understand the development of our children.
